Again, the biggest disappointment was the number rejected based on not following guidelines. Nearly half of those were sent as doc files. Others were rejected for a variety of reasons. Two were unrequested resubmissions. We had one with what must have been 1/8th" margins and an Arial font, another that kept using asterisks to indicate italics, and a myriad of other things that were either directly addressed in our guidelines or in the examples for standard manuscript formatting.

Now I've tried to be nice when it comes to the font face and just change it myself, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have for that any more. I check incoming submissions for guidelines issues, and I also read for panel. I now have 3 panel manuscripts that need my attention, so me helping out with formatting issues, even the easy ones like font face, is less likely to happen. When we say follow the guidelines, FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES.

Also, I've been offline for a few days. If you've been waiting for a response that your submission was received or something similar, I hope to be caught up by the end of the day, but please give me a few days before resending anything. Thanks.

*Really, it would help to put the genre in the Subject Line of the email as requested in the guidelines. And for the one guys who put in the genre designation of "Fiction": NOT helpful.
7th-Jan-2009 11:43 am - December Stats
Running a bit late this month...holiday recovery! December was a quiet month, but it also saw a surge in rejections based on not following guidelines. The slush slow down was probably a good thing, however, as most of the staff was very busy with their holiday plans. ;)

What was probably most disappointing about the rejections based on guidelines is that most of them were repeat offenders. They'd sent manuscripts to us before and had been rejected for the exact same reasons they were rejected this time.

Why an unknown? Because in addition to sending the wrong file format, the author failed to fill out the subject line as requested. Since we don't open anything except rtf files, if the subject line of the email is incorrectly written, we can only go by the information given. It was quite a surprise that rejections based on guidelines issues were so high—it's been much less of a problem until this past month.

On Saturday, December 5, we're releasing a single title for the holidays. We're very excited to bring you this novella by V. G. Ford!

Snow by V. G. Ford

The phone rang just as Nikki Jeffries came in the kitchen door, her arms piled high with shopping bags. She dropped the entire mess on the island, stripped off her gloves, and dug her cell phone out of her pocket, frowning at the number that flashed insistently at her. “Damn, what now?”

She flipped open the phone. “Please tell me I don’t have to kill someone this week for you. It’s Christmas!”
